Varro, Gabrielle et Anne-Sophie Perriaux- "The meaning of a categorization : Unskilled immigrant workers". A documentary study demonstrates how an occupational category (unskilled workers) became a social category (unskilled immigrant workers) in France. Analysis also uncovers the themes underlying the preoccupations of decision-makers and researchers over the last forty years and the development of the notion in French. The article ends by considering the social consequences of such categorizations in language.

Une analyse documentaire a permis de dégager la manière dont une catégorie au départ professionnelle (O.S.), a pu être transformée en une catégorie sociale "les O.S. immigrés". L'analyse révèle aussi les thèmes dominants qui sous-tendent les préoccupations des décideurs et chercheurs pendant les quarante dernières années et l'évolution de la notion en français. Elle débouche sur une réflexion sur les effets sociaux des classifications langagières.
