Rossignol Christian - « An internationational classification of Handicaps » ? Presuppositions and political stakes in the choice of a translation: a sociolinguistic and historical approach. A W.H.O. report « International Classification of impairments, Disabilities, and Handicaps : A manual of classification relating to the consequences of disease » was translated into French in 1988 under the title : « Classification internationale des handicaps : déficiences, incapacités et désavantages. Un manuel de classification des conséquences des maladies ». After retracing the historical evolution of the uses of the terms handicapé and inadapté between the end of W.W.II and the present day, the author pinpoints the problems posed by this translation. He then develops hypotheses relating to the political stakes involved in the French notion of handicap and describes the situation which seems to have been a contributing factor.

L'ouvrage de l'O.M.S. « International Classification of impairments, Disabilities, and Handicaps: A manual of classification relating to the consequences of disease », & été traduit par l' I.N.S.E.R.M. en 1988 sous le titre : « Classification internationale des handicaps : déficiences, incapacités et désavantages. Un manuel de classification des conséquences des maladies ». Après avoir situé l'évolution historique de l'usage des termes « handicapé » et « inadapté » entre la fin de la seconde guerre mondiale et l'époque actuelle, l'auteur évoque les problèmes posés par cette traduction. Il formule ensuite des hypothèses relatives aux enjeux politiques de la notion française de « handicap » et décrit la conjoncture qui semble avoir contribué à ce choix.
