This is an account of a survey of the regional and ethnic identification of young native Wolof-speakers in Dakar and Ziguinchor. Although they think they can pin-point where Wolof-speakers come from, the respondents over-rate their ability to identify and are only vaguely conscious of the clues they use to decide. They tend to assimilate native Wolof-speakers to Wolofs and conceive regional identities in ethnic rather than geographic terms. The performance of the Dakarese and of the Ziguinchorese are differenciated by the latter 's more adequate representation of the Senegalese linguistic universe.

Compte rendu d'une enquête portant sur l'identification régionale et ethnique de jeunes wolophones natifs par des jeunes de Dakar et de Ziguinchor. Bien qu'ils croient de pouvoir reconnaître la provenance des locuteurs du wolof, ces sujets surévaluent leurs possibilités d'identification, n'ont que faiblement conscience des indices pris en compte, tendent à assimiler les wolophones natifs à des Wolof et à concevoir des identifications régionales en termes plus ethniques que spatiaux. Les performance des Dakarois et celles des Ziguinchorois se différencient en ce que les seconds ont une représentation plus adéquate de l'univers linguistique sénégalais.
