The glassmakers of Saint-Just-sur-Loire. The need of a history of the working class. The survey was conducted at the requirement of the Industrial Board of the Glass-Works of Saint-Just within the framework of a research party inquiring into the symbolical labour production which researchers, cultural advisers and «cultural militants » of the industrial companies belonged to. The aims of Saint-Just Industrial Board were to scrutinize an attempt to recapture the collective memory in a failing industrial concern by confronting it to the questions and methods of ethnological research. From the main themes of a cultural action which had taken place before (a publication and an exhibition entitled «The glass dance »), those themes being related to the social and vocational identity of glassmakers, the survey tries to emphasize the disconnection between identitifying references and the contemporary situation on the one side, and the evolving process of a new set of references.

L 'étude a été menée à la demande du Comité d'Établissement des Verreries de Saint-Just dans le cadre d'un groupe de recherches sur la production symbolique ouvrière, auquel participaient des chercheurs, des responsables d'action culturelle et des «militants culturels » des entreprises. L 'objectif du C.E. de Saint-Just était d'approfondir, dans une entreprise en crise, une opération de reconstruction de la mémoire collective en la confrontant aux interrogations et aux méthodes de la recherche ethnologique. A partir des thèmes majeurs d'une action culturelle antérieure (publication et exposition «La danse du verre »), thèmes relatifs à l'identité sociale et professionnelle des verriers, l'étude tente de mettre en évidence le décalage des références identitaires avec la situation contemporaine et le processus en cours de construction d'un nouvel ensemble de références.
