La vallée de la Fure, située entre le lac de Paladru et l'Isère (Dauphiné), a compté au début du siècle une cinquantaine d'usines échelonnées sur 20 kilomètres alors que la rivière en compte 25. Dès le Moyen Age, l'énergie hydraulique a été utilisée (roues hydrauliques puis turbines) et ceci s'est maintenu jusqu'à nos jours. L'analyse de l'évolution de l'industrialisation échelonnée sur sept siècles, montre que les villages et les villes, ainsi qu'un site hydraulique exceptionnel, ont d'abord attiré les ateliers. Ensuite ceux-ci s'installent hors des agglomérations, sur les seuils les plus marqués du lit. Pendant le XIXe siècle, l'industrialisation très forte impose une distribution géographique continue des sites usiniers. Actuellement, une régression se produit et de nombreux sites sont abandonnés. L'énergie hydraulique, aisée à mettre en œuvre, fut un élément majeur de la mise en valeur de la vallée (et ceci au détriment d'autres moteurs telles que les machines à vapeur). L'apparition de l'énergie électrique, aisément transportable, conduisit à une forte diminution de l'utilisation des chutes hydrauliques sans toutefois la faire disparaître totalement. Il subsiste des micro-centrales qui produisent de l'électricité.
