Charpigny (Florence). — Space, time and power in the silk throwing industry in two valleys of the Ardèche : structures and constructs The silk industry was introduced to the Ardèche in the 17th century and was very successful in the 19th century before declining in the 20th century and particularly after World War II. This article is based on testimonies gathered by an oral history project in two typical valleys of the Ardèche. It attemps to identify the social structures and the worldviews linked to the throwing industry in which fibres are mechanically twisted or «thrown» (into thread). It analyses how the process of throwing encourages a division of labour which created in the factory a pattern of movement and a work which was both fonctional and symbolic. It also shows how the factory building, which incorporated the living space of the thrownster s family and his female workforce, became the site where the capitalist power was both exercised and embodied. At the same time it was also a site of social initiation, of social interaction and of transgression for the workers. Their accounts are shaped by this space and this power. Yet they are also accounts based on memory and therefore on time, and bear witness to and about our modem identity — not only our industrial identity, but our wider social and cultural identity.

Implantée en Ardèche au XVIIe siècle, l'industrie du moulinage de la soie a connu une remarquable prospérité au XIXe siècle avant de décliner au XXe, particulièrement après la Seconde Guerre mondiale. A partir du discours recueilli lors d'enquêtes orales dans deux vallées représentatives de l'Ardèche, cet article tentera de dégager les structures et les représentations liées au moulinage, le terme désignant à la fois l'activité de torsion d'un textile au moyen de moulins, et le bâtiment dans lequel elle est réalisée. On montrera notamment comment le moulinage, activité et espace industriels, a généré un partage du travail qui a induit une circulation et une occupation de l'espace fonctionnelle aussi bien que symbolique ; comment, espace de vie au quotidien pour le patron moulinier, sa famille et ses ouvrières, il a été l'espace d'exercice et de représentation du pouvoir patronal ; et enfin comment, parallèlement, il a été lieu d'apprentissage, de sociabilité et de transgression pour les ouvrières. Structuré autour de l'espace et du pouvoir, le discours est aussi un discours sur la mémoire, donc sur le temps, qui témoigne de l'identité d'aujourd'hui, non pas seulement identité industrielle, mais identité globale, sociale et culturelle.
