The Museon Arlaten in the face of History. First muséum of ethnography in the South of France, the Museon Arlaten, as soon as its creation in 1896, is registered in the regionalist plan born from the Félibrige. Its founder, the poet Frédéric Mistral, wants it to be a place of synthesis and contemplation of a local history wich guarantees the statement of a singularity and grants récognition to the «félibréennes » aspirations for a souther Renaissance. At the time of the collecting and of the formulation of the museographic programmes, the past is constantly summoned to stave off the efFects ot the progress and to crédit the myth of the immutability of the rural world. Upon that immovable time (staged behind the glass cases), a present is superimposed in 1903, moulded out of the rein-vented traditions such as the wearing of the Arlesian costume. Later, with Fernand Benoit, the history is again put into contribution to warrant and explain new collections or presentations. The Museon Arlaten will never stop being the melting-pot where the images of an eternal Provence are elaborated.

Premier musée d'ethnographie dans le Midi de la France, le Museon Arlaten s'inscrit dès sa création , en 1 896, dans le projet régionaliste issu du Félibrige. Le poète Frédéric Mistral, son fondateur, s'attache à en faire un lieu de synthèse et de contemplation d'une histoire locale qui cautionne l'affirmation d'une singularité et légitime les aspirations félibréennes à une Renaissance méridionale. Lors de la collecte et de l'élaboration des programmes muséographiques, le passé est sans cesse convoqué pour conjurer les effets du progrès et pour accréditer le mythe de l'immuabilité du monde rural. À ce temps immobile (mis en scène derrière des vitrines), se superpose en 1903 un présent, pétri de traditions réinventées comme celle du port du costume d'Arlésienne. Plus tard, avec Fernand Benoit, l'histoire est encore une fois mise à contribution pour justifier et expliquer de nouvelles collections ou présentations. Ainsi le Museon Arlaten ne cesse-t-il d'être le creuset où s'élaborent les images d'une Provence éternelle.
