The museum as an instrument shaping memory. Any institution plays a part in the construction of memories and history. This is particularly the case with museums, in view of their specific status. Two of its basic tasks — collecting and giving back — are particularly important. Each one depends on the choice of what deserves to be highlighted, a process that hinges on questions of what, why and for whom. Musée Dauphinois is a particularly interesting example. Since the days of Hippolyte Miiller, each of its curators has put a personal interpretation on what nevertheless remains a common aim. Behind an institution given over to memory and heritage, we can see the men and women who built the museum. All of them, now and in the past, have influenced the work of the muséum and its approach. And in so doing they too have corne to shape memory.

Toute institution joue un rôle dans la fabrication de la mémoire et de l'histoire, et celui du musée, par son statut particulier, est pré¬ pondérant. Il se traduit essentiellement à travers deux de ses missions fondamentales que sont la collecte et la restitution. Chacune d'elles résulte du choix de ce qui doit être valorisé, sélection articulée principalement autour des questions «quoi ?», «pourquoi ?», «pour qui ?» L'exemple du Musée dauphinois s'avère passionnant. Depuis Hippolyte Millier, chacun de ses conservateurs a livré une interprétation personnelle de ce qui est néanmoins resté une visée commune. Derrière l'institution de mémoire et de patrimoine, apparaissent donc ceux et celles qui l'ont construite. Tous, hier comme aujourd'hui, ont imprimé et orienté les discours et l'activité de ce lieu, devenant eux aussi, à leur manière, des façonneurs de mémoire.
