Recording the indus trial past of an Alpine valley. Musée de la Romanche. A new page has been turned in the industrial histoiy of Romanche with the opening of this museum, dedicated to the valleys geological and human history. The museum tells the story of life in the area, with some periods turning out to have been surprisingly busy. Since the dawn of history the valley has been a major thoroughfare. More recently hydroelectric power plants were built there to drive chemical and metallurgy works. During the second half of the 19th century the fàctories attracted a massive influx of labour, which stayed till the demise of «conventional» industry. So the focus of local activity has switched from industry to the museum, even if the notion of industrial heritage is still only marginal.

L'histoire industrielle de la vallée de la Romanche franchit aujourd'hui une nouvelle étape à travers la mise en mémoire de son patrimoine, dans cet espace dédié à son histoire géologique et humaine qu'est le musée. Les grandes phases d'une vie intense, qui ont laissé un patrimoine d'une richesse souvent insoupçonnée, sont ici retracées. De l'axe de passage antique aux activités hydroélectriques, électrochimiques et électrométallurgiques, de l'affluence massive de main-d'œuvre dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle à la mort du monde ouvrier «traditionnel», c'est tout un monde que le Musée de la Romanche met en lumière. Après avoir été industrielle, l'aventure est devenue muséographiqtie, alors même que la notion de patrimoine industriel demeure encore marginale.
