At the approach of the centenary of the law of 1905 celebration, he underlines, through his observations, the pressing task for school to come back to republican secularity.

Fallait-il promulguer une nouvelle loi pour promouvoir le principe de laïcité, le renforcer, le refonder, l’illustrer? Directeur d’établissement, puis, au début des années 2000, chef de Cabinet, auprès de Jack Lang, alors ministre de l’Éducation nationale, l’auteur témoigne de la place grandissante des comportements religieux au sein de l’école publique entre 1989 et 2004. À l’approche de la célébration du centenaire de la loi de 1905, il souligne, fort de ses observations, la tâche urgente pour l’école de revenir aux sources de la laïcité républicaine.
