Les carnets de voyage de William Turner (1775-1857) permettent d'analyser en détail la façon dont l'artiste a enregistré sur le terrain et transposé dans des œuvres plus achevées (dessins et aquarelles) les formes d'un site paysager qui l'a particulièrement retenu : celui de la ville de Sisteron et de sa clue, où il est passé en 1836 lors d'un voyage par la route entre Gènes et Grenoble. Multiplication des points de vue, exagération des formes du relief, soucis des détails, sens des volumes et de la lumière, recomposition paysagère : toutes choses dans lesquelles Turner fait preuve d'une grande maîtrise et dont le géographe peut modestement tirer des leçons lorsqu'il veut analyser graphiquement un paysage.
