Cette étude compare les processus hydrologiques dont l'analyse a été faite à partir de mesures obtenues sur un bassin-versant (pluies, débits), et selon trois échelles spatiales. La plupart des exemples analysés proviennent de cas étudiés dans le cadre du Groupement Scientifique Real Collobrier. A une échelle globale, deux types de données hydrologiques sont disponibles : d'une part celles qui caractérisent le volume des crues, tels le coefficient d'écoulement ou les volumes de pluie absorbée par le bassin-versant avant la première montée des eaux, d'autre part celles qui décrivent le « transfert », tels les paramètres de la fonction de transfert, ou le laps de temps et les coefficients de récession des eaux. Les premières, même si elles se situent à une échelle globale, peuvent fournir des informations sur les processus ; si l'humidité initiale du bassin joue un rôle important dans le coefficient d'écoulement, alors les mécanismes dominants d'afflux sont les surfaces saturées contributives. Pour les secondes, l'évolution des paramètres de la fonction de transfert peut aussi donner des informations sur les processus ; dans les petits bassins où ces paramètres sont plutôt stables, quand l'écoulement est hortonien, le transfert devient de plus en plus lent si l'écoulement augmente quand les surfaces saturées contributives dominent.
