HISTORIANS IN SEARCH OF CONSENSUS The first text-book on Caledonian history edited by a team of Caledonian authors came out in 1992. In certain chapters of this book « New Caledonia » becomes the land of the « Kanak ». A discourse analysis provides the foundation for investigating these two ways of apprehending the same object and a basis for distinguishing between aboriginal and nonnative language users. In order to uphold the desire for consensus of authors inspired by the « spirit » of the Matignon agreements, the authors themselves are not excluded from the scope of this analysis.

La « Nouvelle- Calédonie » devient le « pays kanak » dans certains chapitres. Une analyse du discours permet de construire les deux modes d'appréhension du même objet et les positionnements allogène et endogène des énonciateurs.
