The spread of computers and the sophistication of information networks connecting computers have produced a reduction in the time required for information exchange and the labor intensity of the distribution system. Moreover, the majority of transactions in the distribution system are regulated by lead time. For these reasons, reducing the time required for information exchange, i.e. reducing time/distance, has great spatial significance and may necessitate a change in base positioning. The factors affecting change in base positioning are delivery costs and inventory costs. Therefore, factories and distribution bases basically become concentrated.

La diffusion des ordinateurs et la sophistication des réseaux de téléinformatique ont eu des conséquences sur les échanges d’information et le travail. Réduire le temps nécessaire à l’échange des informations a une grande signification spatiale et peut conduire à une révision des critères de choix en matière de localisation des usines ou des centres de distribution.
