The city of Rochefort, which was created at the same time as Colbert's dockyard, withered along with the abovementioned minister at the close of the last century. Due to such an event this man-made, royal city had to integrate it self within the region merely in order to survive. The creation of important factories occasionally responding to national requirements (such as in the field of aeronautics), finally saved it from the impotence it suffered during the period 1919-1939. The dynamics thus created vigorously grew until the crisis of the seventies when industrial activity was hit headlong. Since then, the town council has engaged itself in self- willed policy aiming at maintaining the same level of employmen in this field (such as financing workshops and factories within its own buildings).

La ville de Rochefort, née avec l'Arsenal de Colbert, faillit dépérir en même temps que lui à la fin du siècle dernier. Il fallait désormais que la cité royale, créée artificiellement, s'intègre à sa région pour survivre. La création d'usines importantes répondant parfois à des besoins nationaux (aéronautique) la sortit enfin de sa léthargie au cours de la période 1919-1939. La dynamique ainsi créée se développa vigoureusement jusqu'à la crise des années 1970 qui frappa l'activité industrielle de plein fouet. Depuis lors, la municipalité s 'est engagée dans une politique volontariste visant à maintenir dans ce secteur le même niveau d'emplois (financement d'ateliers-relais et d'usines-relais).
