« Sovereignty and coinage ». Le cas du royaume odryse (Ve-IVe siècle av. J.-C.)

The understanding of Thracian coinages has been disrupted by a political approach systematically combining sovereignty and coinage. This has to be challenged by taking into consideration the organization and the history of powers in this region. The study of strikes and monetary uses shows that the Odrysian coinage (5th-4th century BC) fitted in a framework of exchanges settled and designed by the Greeks. It leads to new methodological conclusions concerning the coin circulation, the identification of the issuing authorities and the relations with the Greek cities to which the Odrysians borrowed monetary types.

La compréhension des monnayages thraces a été perturbée par une lecture politique qui, associant systématiquement frappe monétaire et souveraineté, doit être confrontée aux réalités de l’organisation des pouvoirs guerriers dans la région. L’étude des émissions et des usages monétaires montre que le monnayage odryse (Ve-IVe siècle av. J.-C.) s’est inscrit dans un cadre d’échanges préalablement dessiné par les Grecs. Elle entraîne des conclusions méthodologiques nouvelles concernant la circulation des monnaies, l’identification des autorités émettrices et les relations avec les cités grecques auxquelles les Odryses empruntèrent des types monétaires.
