Ayant opposé la citation d'autorité, qui vise à conférer à un développement le prestige de la source évoquée, à la citation subversive, qui détourne le sens de l'extrait cité par le travail que lui impose son nouveau contexte, l'auteur se concentre sur trois exemples de ce dernier cas de figure, en décrivant pour chacun les techniques textuelles mises en oeuvre ainsi que l'enjeu de ce détournement. Le premier cas montre comment le Huainanzi libère les significations - alors gelées - de citations enchâssées dans les citations qu'il fait et ce, aux fins de masquer la nature véritable du système politique auquel il souscrit. Avec le second cas, l'on voit Zhuang zi procéder à une subversion satirique du discours confucéen en organisant son texte autour d'une citation absente. Le troisième cas montre la manière dont un roman du XIXe siècle se construit par reprise et transformation de matériaux classiques antérieurs.
