Vaincue, non sans une longue et énergique résistance, par trois puissances coloniales au cours du XXe siècle, victime d'une « légende noire » française durable qui faisait d'elle l'exemple même de la confrérie musulmane maléfique, compromise par le jeu des Puissances à partir de la Première Guerre mondiale, privée de légitimité et d'histoire par le régime du colonel Qadhafi, la Sanusiyya représente un acteur majeur et méconnu de l'histoire du nord du continent africain, tant par le champ géographique couvert que par la durée du phénomène (env. 1840-1969). Le cas étudié ici est celui du Ouaddaï, principale formation politique de l'espace tchadien au XIXe siècle, et, à partir des années 1860, partenaire diplomatique et commercial privilégié de la confrérie dans la protection du nouvel axe économique Benghazi-Kufra-Abbéché. Cet article constitue une révision critique des sources disponibles sur ces relations tchado-sanûsî. Ici encore, la « légende noire » a exercé ses effets, interprétant constamment en terme de complot et de subversion l'action subsaharienne de la Sanusiyya. Une source française bien informée, restée longtemps inaccessible, celle de l'interprète Djian, permet de proposer une vision rééquilibrée du rôle de la confrérie, qui apparaît plutôt comme une puissance d'arbitrage de type chérifien, et non comme une candidate au pouvoir ou au renversement des pouvoirs.
