The metalworking scenes depicted on the tomb reliefs and paintings of pharaonic Egypt give us the opportunity to examine the diverse techniques known to the ancient Egyptians and evidences for technological change over time. Data from the pictorial record together with what is known from the archaeological record and elemental and metallographic analysis show evidence oj a major change occurring at the beginning of the New Kingdom. This seems to be related to the greater integration of Egypt within the international world of trade, flourishing at the beginning of the Late Bronze Age and to its use of traded copper coming from the smelting of sulfide ores.

Les scènes d'ateliers de fonderie figurées sur les murs des tombes de l'Egypte pharaonique apportent beaucoup d'informations sur la façon dont était travaillé le cuivre dans l'Egypte ancienne. Ces données confrontées au matériel provenant de fouilles archéologiques et aux résultats d'analyses élémentaires et métallographiques, permettent d'observer les changements qui ont pu se produire dans le matériel et les techniques entre l'Ancien et le Nouvel Empire. On note en particulier une modification importante au début du Nouvel Empire liée sans doute à une ouverture plus grande de l'Egypte au commerce proche-oriental au début du Bronze Récent et à l'utilisation d'un métal cuivreux de nature différente provenant de la réduction de minerais sulfurés.
