Political Economy as viewed from the Garbage Dump : Jemdet Nasr Occupation at the Uruk Mound, Abu Salabikh

This paper reports on the analysis and interpretation of two refuse-filled pits dating to the Jemdet Nasr period that were excavated on the Uruk Mound, Abu Salabikh, Iraq. Systematic recovery and recording of the artifacts and organic remains from the pits, as well as measurement of the volume of excavated deposits, permit comparisons of densities of materials. Using these data, I explore some aspects of the political economy of the Jemdet Nasr period and propose a possible origin for the refuse that was dumped into the pits.

Cet article analyse le contenu de deux décharges en fosse datant de la période Jemdet Nasr, fouillées à Abu Salabikh, Iraq (Tell « Uruk »), et en propose une interprétation. La collecte et l'enregistrement systématiques des artefacts et des restes organiques, ainsi que la mesure du volume des dépôts fouillés ont permis de comparer la densité des divers assemblages. Ces données sont utilisées afin d'examiner certains aspects de l'économie politique de la période Jemdet Nasr, ce qui conduit à proposer une origine possible pour le contenu de ces fosses.
