Three notes on Phaedon. 1 . 98 C -99 B : a. to explain the use of the eventual in 98 E5 and 99 A4, the perfect 5côoktcu (98 E3) must be considered as a perfect of "perennity" or "eternity" : Socrates rejects any circumstantial element in the formation of moral judgment and decision. b. μέν and δέ in 99 A4-5 make explicit, in accordance with a fairly frequent pattern in Plato, an implicit μέν in correspondence with μέντοι in 99 A8. c. The point is to show the extent to which the anaxagorean theory of causation makes worse the errors of the pure physicists. 2. In 99 C3 , ἄν appears to result from a diplography. 3. The distribution of the occurrences of φιλόσοφος and cognate words exactly coincide with the articulations of the dialectic develop ment, thus giving further emphasis to its purport.
