The Greek cities of the West were generally provided with surrounding walls built or rebuilt towards the end of the archaic era. There are therefore few surrounding walls built in the fifth century. By the end of the fifth and the beginning of the fourth century, the written sources presumably overestimate the part played by Denys of Syracusae in the development of defensive techniques. Decisive advance were to make themselves felt only after the middle of the fourth century and chiefly under the reign of Agathocles, therefore at the outset of the Hellenistic era. In the territory, fortified sites are to be found as early as the archaic era, but they are of delicate interpretation and real defensive crowns of phouria are exceptional.

Les cités grecques d'Occident possèdent généralement des enceintes construites ou rebâties vers la fin de l'époque archaïque. Il y a donc peu d'enceintes construites au Ve s. A la fin du Ve s. et au début du IVe s., les sources écrites surestiment sans doute le rôle joué par Denys de Syracuse dans l'évolution des techniques défensives. Des progrès décisifs se feront sentir seulement après le milieu du IVe s., et surtout sous le règne d'Agathocle, donc au début de l'époque hellénistique. Dans le territoire, on trouve des sites fortifiés dès l'époque archaïque, mais leur interprétation est délicate et les véritables couronnes défensives de phrouria sont exceptionnelles.
