Alchemie : ein Schwefelgeruch. Das Geheimnis der Alchemisten beruht auf der komplexen Chemie des Schwefels (der alchemistische Mercurius). Das Grosse Werk, oder die Herstellung des Steines der Weisen, ist nichts anderes als die Bereitung der Schwefelsäure aus Sulfide welche durch langsame Oxydation in feuchter Atmosphäre in Sulfate übergehen. Das Grosse Elixier und die Projektionspulver, aus diesem Stein der Weisen hergestellt, gehören der Gruppe der Goldthiosulfate an.
