Sébastien Choulette (Toul 1803 -Nice 1877), military pharmacist, botanist and geographer. His life and work Sébastien Choulette was born in Toul on October 21, 1803. When he was twenty years old, he became pupil at the military school and hospital in Metz. After numerous affectations in hospitals, he was received as a pharmacist in the school of pharmacy of Strasbourg on January 26, 1833. In 1841, he was professor of botany and medicament preparation in the military school and hospital in Strasbourg where he remained for eleven years. Five books were written by him on geography and zoology during this period. Then, in 1852, he was assigned for Algeria where he served for six years in the hospitals in Philippeville and Constantine. These years were for him the occasion of writing eight communications in pharmaceutical or analytical or forensic fields for the journal Répertoire de pharmacie. All of them and four others were later brought together to form a book entitled Observations pratiques de pharmacie, de chimie et de médecine légale. This period was also used to set up an important collection of algerian plants that was published under the name Fragmenta florae Algeriensis exsiccata or Recueil déplantes d'Algérie. Some algerian plants are dedicated to Choulette. After the direction of the military reserve of drugs in Marseille, Choulette retired in 1864 and died in Nice on July 20, 1877.

Sébastien Choulette naît à Toul le 21 octobre 1803. À vingt ans, en 1823, il entame une carrière militaire en devenant pharmacien élève à l'hôpital militaire d'instruction de Metz. Au terme de plusieurs affectations, il est reçu pharmacien à Strasbourg le 26 janvier 1833. En 1841, il devient professeur « de botanique et de préparation des médicaments » à l'hôpital militaire d'instruction de Strasbourg où il reste affecté jusqu'en 1852 et où il rédige cinq ouvrages. À ce moment, il est désigné pour les hôpitaux de la division de Constantine, en Algérie, où il passe un peu moins de sept années. Ce séjour est pour lui l'occasion de publier au Répertoire de pharmacie huit notes sur des sujets pharmaceutiques, analytiques ou médico-légaux, plus tard réunies dans un ouvrage intitulé Observations pratiques de pharmacie, de chimie et de médecine légale, mais surtout de ras- sembler une très importante collection de plantes sèches diffusée sous le titre de Fragmenta florae Algeriensis exsiccata. Plusieurs espèces de plantes d'Algérie lui sont dédiées. Après avoir reçu la direction de la Réserve des médicaments de Marseille en 1858, Choulette se retire en 1864 à Nice où il meurt le 20 juillet 1877.
