Ende 2005 wurde unter dem Ortskern des Dorfes Mesnil-Domqueur zufällig ein ausgedehntes unterirdisches Gangsystem entdeckt, das als ein Modell der Souterrains des muche -Typs in der Picardie angesehen werden kann. Die Fundstätte erweist sich insbesondere als interessant, weil sie nicht den Umgestaltungen ausgesetzt war, die gewöhnlich mit späteren Benutzungsphasen einhergehen. Das Souterrain ist in einem hervorragenden Erhaltungszustand und vollständig zugänglich. Zum ersten Mal bietet sich die Möglichkeit, die architektonischen und archäologischen Aspekte eines seit Anfang des 18. Jh. verschlossenen Souterrains zu untersuchen. Diese höchstinteressanten Informationen erlauben es, die Chronologie der Benutzungsphasen zu präzisieren und dieser in den Kriegen des zweiten Drittels des 17. Jh. eingerichteten Kategorie von Souterrain-Architektur eine ursprüngliche Funktion zuzuweisen.

T he extensive underground refuge discovered by chance in late 2005 in the heart of the village of Mesnil-Domqueur may be considered as an example of what is called in Picardy a “ muche” (i. e. a “ hiding-place”). The most interesting point about this site is that it did not undergo the modifications usually entailed by later occupation or reutilisation. It is fully accessible, and was found in an excellent state of preservation. For the first time, it has been possible to undertake an architectural and archaeological survey of an underground complex which has remained sealed since the beginning of the eighteenth century. Thus, thanks to the first-rate data collected, we are able to establish a precise chronology of the successive periods of occupation and to propose hypotheses as to the initial purpose of such underground works, which were designed during the wars of the second third of the seventeenth century.

Le vaste souterrain aménagé découvert fortuitement fin 2005 sous le centre du village de Mesnil-Domqueur peut être regardé comme un modèle des souterrains de type muche en Picardie. L’intérêt majeur du site réside dans le fait qu’il n’a pas connu les remaniements habituellement occasionnés par les occupations ou les réutilisations tardives. Accessible dans son intégralité, il est parvenu jusqu’à nous dans un très bon état de conservation. Pour la première fois, une étude architecturale et archéologique est possible dans un souterrain resté clos depuis le début du XVIIIe siècle. Des informations de tout premier ordre permettent ainsi de préciser la chronologie des occupations et de proposer une fonction primitive à cette catégorie d’ouvrages souterrains conçus durant les guerres du deuxième tiers du XVIIe siècle.
