Die in der Picardie und insbesondere dem Departement Somme im Vorfeld der großen (über 400 km) Straßenbauprojekte durchgeführten Grabungen haben die Perzeption der Besiedlung dieses Territoriums in der jüngeren Eisenzeit grundlegend verändert. Von Dutzenden zum Teil aneinander grenzenden Höfen wurden Umfassungsgräben identifiziert und ergraben und lieferten eine Fülle von Informationen. Das Verzeichnis der Siedlungsplätze-und Formen, der Strukturen und Aktivitäten bemüht sich eine genaue Vorstellung von der gallischen Besiedlung zu vermitteln, doch das Bild erweist sich als überaus heterogen. Einigen Fundstellen wird ein besonderer Platz eingeräumt, weil sie beispielhaft oder im Gegenteil ungewöhnlich sind.

Totalling over 400 linear km, the projected road and motorway developments throughout Picardy and especially in the Somme département , have radically altered our perception of Iron Age II land occupation. The enclosure ditches of dozens of agricultural settlements, sometimes adjoining one another, have been identified and excavated, yielding a vast amount of data. An analytical catalogue giving the situation and the type of settlement, the structures encountered and the activities evidenced sets out to give a complete picture, which is anything but a uniform and coherent image of the Gaulish population. The emphasis is placed on certain sites, either because of their value as models, or because on the contrary they display atypical features.

Avec plus de 400 km de tracé traversant la Picardie et principalement la Somme, les projets routiers ont profondément modifié la perception de l’occupation du territoire au second âge du Fer. Les fossés d’enclos de dizaines d’établissements agricoles, parfois contigus, ont été identifiés et fouillés, livrant une somme colossale d’informations. Un catalogue raisonné des implantations et des formes de l’occupation, des structures rencontrées et des activités attestées, s’attache à brosser un tableau complet, bien loin de fournir une image homogène du peuplement gaulois. L’accent est mis sur certains sites, pour leur valeur d’exemple ou au contraire pour leur aspect exceptionnel.
