The lion and the gazelle : states and Touaregs. Three examples (Algeria, Mali, Niger) show that the future of Saharo-Sahelian Touaregs is conditioned by historical and climatic conditions as well as the political orientations of the states. However, the capacity for social flexibility, a keen sense of politics and power and avoidance tactics permit these nomadic pastoralists to remain a political force in the modern equation.

Trois cas (Algérie, Mali, Niger) illustrent le devenir des touaregs saharo-sahéliens, conditionné par des circonstances historiques et climatiques, et par les orientations politiques et le poids des États considérés. Des capacités de flexibilité sociale, un sens aigu du politique et du pouvoir, des tactiques d’esquive permettent à ces pasteurs-nomades d’être partie prenante de rapports de force politique moderne.
