Such a little democratization for Togo. The democratization of the Eyadema system led to a bloody chaos and finally to its restoration. This unbelievable outcome was a consequence of strategic errors by the opposition. However the vascillation of the African desk for François Mitterrand, who, stuck between the democratic conditionality declared at La Baule and its strategic support of the Togolese despot, militated against the democratic change.

La démocratisation du régime Eyadéma a tourné au chaos sanglant et à sa restauration. Si l’incroyable division et les erreurs de stratégie de l’opposition expliquent cette situation, l’attitude de Paris aussi qui, coincé entre la conditionnalité démocratique affichée à La Baule et son soutien traditionnel au despote togolais, a préféré militer contre le changement politique qu’il a fini pas redouter.
