«traffic jams in antananarivo or the political economy of the streets». The material condition of the streets of Antananarivo, Madagascar, is briefly assessed. On this scene, three types of developments are studied by way of observation and in-depth analysis : the social side of the natural alternation of day and night, with the problem of urban crime ; the big times of historical protest when masses took to the streets ; the explosion of the informal sector in production and trade. The street reveals the tensions and passions of society and the weakness of the state.

On décrit d’abord l’état matériel des rues de Tananarive, puis on observe et analyse trois aspects de l’occupation des voies publiques : le rythme quotidien de la vie urbaine et la hantise de l’insécurité ; les grands moments historiques de la rue dans le long terme ; le fourmillement des échanges économiques informels, preuve de dynamisme mais menace pour l’économie officielle et pour l’État. La rue reflète les tensions et les passions de la société globale.
