The Burkina Faso legislative elections of 11 may 1997 : «elections like no others» ? The Burkina Faso legislative elections of 11 May 1997 saw the crushing victory of President Compaore’s party, the CDP (Congrès pour la démocratie et le progrès). This victory was due to three main factors : the organisation of the CDP, their human resources and their innovative ability. With this in mind, the elections of May 1997 are, despite the imperfections which tarnished them, a sign of a certain rooting of the democratic process underway, as well of that of the stability of the current regime. From this point of view, these elections are profoundly ambivalent, in so far as the scale of the success of the President’s party makes the hypothesis of a change-over of political power improbable in the short and medium term.

Les élections législatives burkinabè du 11 mai 1997 ont vu la victoire écrasante du parti du président Compaoré, le CDP (Congrès pour la démocratie et le progrès). Cette victoire tient à trois facteurs principaux : l’organisation du CDP, ses ressources humaines et matérielles et sa capacité d’innovation. Dans cette optique, les élections de mai 1997, en dépit des imperfections qui les ont entachées, sont à la fois le signe d’un certain enracinement du processus démocratique en cours et celui de la grande stabilité du régime actuel. De ce point de vue, ces élections sont profondément ambivalentes dans la mesure où l’ampleur même du succès du parti présidentiel rend improbable à court et moyen terme l’hypothèse de l’alternance politique.
