In this text written at the end of the 1980s, Juan Linz provides a sociological reading of the state of Spanish society. In particular, he revisits a number of major socio-political changes which have affected Spain since the end of Franquism. Indeed, this text can be considered as a document that is no less than a milestone for the histgory of sociology in Spain, a paradox given that the author calls in this article for the overtaking of sociology by historical sociology. Indeed, the point made here is that the social weight of a political past must not prevent a people from working upon their collective memory. Last but not least, this article provides a glimpse of an unknown aspect of the work ofthepolitologo de Yale: his empircial analysis of political behaviour. Dans ce texte de la fin des années 80, Juan Linz propose une importante lecture sociologique de l'état de la société espagnole. Il revient ici sur les grands changements socio-politiques qui l'ont affectée depuis la sortie du franquisme. Il s'agit là d'un document original qui peut être considéré comme une étape dans l'histoire de la sociologie en Espagne. Paradoxe certain pour un article où l'auteur en appelle à un dépassement de la sociologie par la sociologie historique. De fait, le poids social du passé politique ne doit pas empêcher le travail de mémoire. Enfin, ce texte permet de donner un aperçu d'un aspect méconnu travail du poli- tologo de Yale, à savoir l'analyse empirique des comportements politiques. En cela, il perpétue de façon magistrale l'approche "rokkanienne " de l'articulation du social et du politique.
