Western countries failed to understand the reasons for this show-case trial that dominated the public's attention for more than two months. According to the author of this article, this trial must be considered in the light of the demaoization process launched more than two and a half years ago, the latest episode being the eviction of Hua Guofeng from the chairmanship of the party.
