Une croissance économique médiocre depuis 1991, et une année 1995 terrible pour le Japon alimentent la thèse du déclin et révèlent les défaillances de la société nippone. Cependant, en dépit de la crise bancaire et du vieillissement démographique, le pays conserve de nombreux atouts : entrée imminente dans la vie active d'une génération très éduquée, forte épargne, importantes capacités technologiques, extension globale de son industrie.
