The Consequences of 1989 : the Objections of German Foreign Policy, by Michael Stürmer Some nations, like the United States, live by their visions, others are driven, like the Europeans, by their nightmares. It's the case of a Germany haunted by the specters of the past and always afraid to losing what has been achieved since the catastrophes have ceased to visit it. Thus, German national interests can be expressed, in its fundamental form, in three wishes : to eat well, to sleep quietly, and never to be atone. In this framework, the transatlantic relations and the European building represent an essential part of Bonn 's foreign policy. In fact, the cultivation of those two alliances takes precedence over any national ambition and haven't been put into question after the upheavals of 1989 and the unification.

Quelques nations, comme les Etats-Unis, poursuivent leurs rêves, tandis que d'autres, comme les Européens, sont hantées par leurs cauchemars. C'est le cas d'une Allemagne obsédée par les spectres du passé et la crainte de perdre tout ce qu'elle a réalisé depuis lors. Ainsi les intérêts nationaux allemands s'en tiennent-ils à l'essentiel : bien manger, dormir en paix et ne jamais être seul. Dans ce cadre, les relations transatlantiques et la construction européenne représentent un élément primordial de la politique étrangère de Bonn. Ces liens ont même la préséance sur l'ambition proprement nationale et n'ont pas fait l'objet d'une remise en cause suite aux bouleversements de 1989 et à la réunification.
