Between private intiative and national issue. Origins and development of sport's policies in western Europe (Britain, Germany, France, Italy) Pierre Lanfranchi During the XXth century, sports rapidly extended beyond the private sphere and became national issues, largely taken in charge by the States. Adopting a comparative perspective, this article describes how each of four western european State-nations (Britain, France, Germany and Italy) has adopted a very specifie way in managing sport's activities of its citizens and exploiting sport's performances of its athletes on the international stage. The author raises the question of consistency between these different traditions in public management of sports, facing the challenge of the european institutions.

Genèse et évolution des politiques sportives en Europe (Grande-Bretagne, Allemagne, France, Italie) Pierre Lanfranchi Au cours du XXe siècle, les questions sportives ont rapidement dépassé la sphère privée pour devenir des enjeux nationaux, en grande partie pris en charge par les Etats. Dans une perspective comparative, cet article retrace comment quatre Etats européens (la Grande-Bretagne, la France, l'Allemagne et l'Italie) ont chacun construit une façon spécifique d'encadrer le sport et de s'en servir sur la scène internationale. L'auteur s'interroge également sur la compatibilité de ces différentes traditions d'intervention (ou de non intervention) étatique dans le cadre actuel de la construction européenne.
