Le travail du textile en Région Centre de l'Age du Fer au Haut Moyen-Age. / Textile working in the « Région Centre » from the Iron Age to the early Middle Ages

From a gazetteer of documentary, epigraphical, iconographical, toponymical, archaeo-zoological, archaeo -botanical and archaeological evidences, a regional synthesis on textile working is attempted for the territories of the cities of Chartres-Orléans, Bourges, Tours and partially Sens. The chronological area covered includes the Iron Age, Gallo- Roman and Early Medieval periods. Archaeological information (loom-weights, spindle-whorls, linenrubbers, shears, etc..) is the most preponderant, p articular ily for the Gallo-Roman period for which a clearer picture can be given. Some technical points of consideration also arise from the evidence and the important economic and social questions of the location of workshops is discussed. Here, for the periods under discussion, textile craft never reached an industrial level.

A partir d'un inventaire comprenant les documents textuels, épigraphiques, iconographiques, toponymiques, archéo-zoologiques, archéo-botaniques et archéologiques, une synthèse régionale du travail du textile est tentée sur un territoire couvrant les cités de Chartres-Orléans, Bourges, Tours et, pour partie, de Sens. L'aire chronologique couverte comprend les Ages du Fer (Hallstatt, La Tène), la période gallo-romaine, et le Haut Moyen-Age (périodes mérovingienne et carolingienne). Les informations fournies par l'archéologie (pesons, fusaïoles, lissoirs, forces, etc..) restent prépondérantes et concernent surtout la période gallo-romaine, pour laquelle une image relativement plus nette peut être présentée. Un certain nombre de considérations techniques sont également issues de cette documentation. L'important problème économique et social de la localisation des ateliers est abordé. Cet artisanat n'a jamais atteint ici, pour la période étudiée, le niveau industriel.
