Following a report published in the Revue Archéologique du Centre in 1992, this article presents the recent results of the excavation at Rigny. It is now clear that the site has been in use since the early Middle Ages — the earliest burials dating from at least the Sh or 9h century — and thus long prior to the building of the existing 11th or 12th century-church. Excavation revealed the northern extent of the burial area and that this had been reduced by successive stages. The first reduction, marked by an enclosure wall, took place in the 12th or 13th century. A number of domestic buildings existed within the graveyard until the 15th century. The excavation of a succession of priest'houses and associated buildings make it possible to reconstruct the evolution of the rectory from the 16th until the 19h century.

Le présent article, qui fait suite à un premier bilan paru dans la Revue Archéologique du Centre en 1992, présente les nouveaux acquis de la fouille du centre paroissial de Rigny. Celle-ci a révélé une occupation du site au cours du haut Moyen-Âge et montré que les premières sépultures remontent au moins au VIIIe-IXe s. ; elles sont donc bien antérieures à l'église qui subsiste actuellement et qui date du XIe-XIIe s. Les recherches ont permis d'atteindre la limite de la zone d'inhumation au nord de l'église. Celle-ci a été reculée par étapes successives : la première réduction de l'espace funéraire est intervenue au XIIe-XIIIe s. et a été matérialisée, dès cette époque, par un mur de clôture. Jusqu'au XVe s., le cimetière a abrité quelques constructions à usage domestique ; à partir du XVIe s., il a été réservé exclusivement aux morts. La fouille des presbytères successifs permet de reconstituer l'évolution de l'exploitation du curé depuis le XVe s. au moins jusqu'au XIXe s.
