L'Augusteum de la fontaine de Nîmes : étude archéologique du bassin de la source et de la canalisation souterraine ouest

The planning of the underground works of the Augusteum in Nimes discovered during the 18th century and which were believed to be destroyed, had up to now never been thoroughly studied. This study which belongs to larger ones concerning water in ancient times in Nimes was begun in 1991 with the speleological exploration NEMAUSA XII. From the results of this study, it appears that nothing was left to chance in this significant sanctuary where water, daily controlled and given as a show with the use of peculiar hydraulic techniques, emphasized the sacred character of the site and at the same time very likely helped for the imperial propaganda.

Les aménagements souterrains de l'Augusteum mis au jour au XVIIIe siècle et que l'on croyait détruits, n'avaient encore jamais fait l'objet d'une étude approfondie. Cette dernière, qui s'inscrit dans une problématique plus générale sur l'eau dans l'antiquité à Nîmes, a été entreprise en 1991 lors de l'exploration spéléologique NEMAUSA XII. Les résultats obtenus nous révèlent que rien n'était laissé au hasard dans cet important sanctuaire où l'eau, quotidiennement maîtrisée et offerte en spectacle par la mise en œuvre de techniques hydrauliques particulières, accentuait le caractère sacré du site tout en servant vraisemblablement la propagande impériale.
