La villa romaine des Platanes à Saint-Tropez (Var)

In 1995 an emergency excavation was carried out on a Roman Villa known by researches dated back to 1930 but still unpublished. The synthesis of old and recent data allows to distinguish eight phases of evolution of the ancient living conditions on a period spreading out from the first century B.C. till the sixth century A.D. Though the study does not bring any evidence concerning the identification of Saint-Tropez as the town of Athenopolis mentionned by Pliny and Pomponius Mela, it is noticeable that the Plane Trees site was likely to be occupied since the second quarter of the first century B.C., that is to say before the « deductio » of the Frejus colony, and that is has yielded a Greek funerary inscription of the Imperial time. Another point needs to be underlined: the late phases shows a luxurious rural building which was occupied at least until the first quarter of the sixth century and was very likely provided with a paleochristian place of worship.

En 1995, une fouille d'urgence a porté sur une villa romaine connue par des recherches des années 1930 restées inédites. La synthèse des données anciennes et récentes permet de distinguer huit phases d'évolution de l'habitat antique s'échelonnant du 1er s. av. J.-C. au Vie s. après. Sans apporter de révélation sur l'identification possible de Saint-Tropez à l'agglomération d'Athenopolis mentionnée par Pline et Pomponius Mela, il faut remarquer que le site des Platanes est vraisemblablement occupé depuis le second quart du 1er s. av. J.-C, c'est-à-dire avant la déduction de la colonie de Fréjus et qu'il a livré une inscription funéraire grecque d'époque impériale. Un autre point est à souligner : les phases tardives correspondent à un luxueux établissement rural occupé au moins jusqu'au premier quart du VIe s. et probablement doté d'un lieu de culte paléochrétien.
