This paper gives the results of researches about the Roman settelment in the district of Martigues (Bouches-du-Rhône). The site of Maritima Aviticorum cannot be localized in the island of Martigues. On the other hand, the discovery of a structure crisscrossed by a network of streets justify its localisation on the shore of l'Etang, 2 km North-West. The results of the excavation of the agglomeration of Saint-Pierre-les-Martigues, occupied from the 6th century B.C. to the 2nd century A. D. completes the presentation of Roman occupation.

La reprise de la documentation archéologique ancienne sans a priori et avec un œil neuf permet de proposer une nouvelle interprétation sur la nature de certains sites : villae qui sont en réalité des vici ou inversement, villa située dans un vicus. Les plans des thermes apportent bien souvent des éléments déterminants. Cette étude prend en compte quelques sites des Trois Gaules.
