Une inscription de Martigues et le statut de Maritima Avaticorum

By examining an inscription which was recently discovered in Martigues (Maritima Auaticorum) and which mentions a woman of peregrine statute, and brought together with other inscriptions issuing from the same locality which mention persons of peregrine statute, and also a seuir augustalis endowed with the Roman citizenship, the author undertakes to show that Martigues was under the High Empire a locality which was a part of the territory of the town of Arles (Arelate), that it was destitute of particular magistracies, and that it was inhabited, in the time of the Julio-Claudian emperors, at least in part, by incolae of peregrine statute who were not citizens of the Roman colony of Arelate.

A partir de l'examen d'une inscription récemment découverte à Martigues mentionnant une pérégrine et rapprochée d'autres inscriptions de cette localité mentionnant des pérégrins, et aussi un sévir augustal citoyen romain, on tente de montrer que Martigues fut sous le Haut Empire une localité faisant partie intégrante du territoire arlésien, dénuée de magistratures propres, et peuplée à l'époque julio-claudienne, au moins en partie, d'incolae de statut pérégrin qui n'appartenaient pas au corps civique de la colonie romaine d'Arles.
