The study of the lapidary material from the forum of the Castellas agglomeration, in Murviel-lès-Montpellier (Hérault, France), revealed many lewis holes whose form suggests the existence of a gripping tool exerting its effort in the direction of the width of the mortise, contrary to what is generally accepted. The shape of the instrument locked in these mortises for lifting the blocks is the subject of different hypotheses. Following the example of the well-known lifting-tongs, a lewis can be reproduced, made up of joint and articulated pieces, that lock during lifting. We propose here a hypothetical restoration. Very simple to use, facilitating the work of hollowing the mortise into the block, the reconstructed tool has been successfully tested for lifting a block weighing more than 800 kg.

L’étude du matériel lapidaire du forum de l’agglomération du Castellas, à Murviel-lès-Montpellier (Hérault), a révélé de nombreuses mortaises de louve dont la forme implique l’existence d’un outil de préhension exerçant son effort dans le sens de la largeur de la mortaise, contrairement à ce qui est habituellement admis. La forme de l’instrument bloqué dans ces mortaises pour le levage des blocs fait l’objet de différentes hypothèses. À l’instar de la pince d’intérieur bien connue, on peut restituer une louve, composée de pièces solidaires articulées se bloquant lors du levage. Une hypothèse de restitution de celle-ci est proposée ici. D’un usage très simple, facilitant le travail de creusement de la mortaise dans le bloc, l’instrument ainsi restitué a été expérimenté avec succès pour le levage d’un bloc de plus de 800 kg.
