Le chapiteau figuré de Javols-Anderitum (Lozère, France) : une composition ornementale singulière

The production of a digital cast of the upper register of the Corinthian capital of the Javols pilaster, known as the “ capital of Cybele”, has not only provided important information on the morphology of this incomplete piece of architecture, but has also allowed us to re-examine the identification of the axial scene depicted. The recognition of griffins in the two protomes led to the identification of a singular pattern resulting from the contamination of two themes of imperial iconography, for an important monument of this provincial civitas.

La réalisation d’un moulage numérique du registre supérieur du chapiteau corinthien de pilastre de Javols, connu sous l’appellation «chapiteau de Cybèle » a permis non seulement d’apporter des précisions importantes sur la morphologie de cette pièce architecturale incomplète, mais aussi, de réexaminer l’identification de la scène axiale figurée. La reconnaissance de griffons dans les deux protomés a conduit à mettre en évidence un schéma singulier qui résulte de la contamination de deux thèmes de l’iconographie impériale, pour un monument important de ce chef-lieu de cité provincial.
