In this article, the results of a certain number of empirical observations show that HALLIDAY's claim that there is only one possible intonation pattern for yes - no questions in English is wrong. It is shown that a rising as well as a falling contour are equally possible, though no equivalent. An interpretation is offered for the specific contribution of each one of them in terms of a theory of enonciation.

Dans cet article, les résultats d’un certain nombre d’observations empiriques montrent que HALLIDAY a tort de soutenir qu’il existe un schéma intonatif unique pour les questions fermées en anglais. Il est montré qu'un contour montant et un contour descendant sont également possibles, bien que non équivalents. Une interprétation de l'apport spécifique de chacun est proposée dans une perspective énonciative.
