The essay is not concerned with the thematics of time in John Metcalfs "Travelling Northward", important as it is, but with the narrative manipulation of time, and especially with the relation of order between story time and discourse time. Metcalfs novella combining a strong chronological line and a subtle play with analepses manages to enhance both its episodic and its configurational dimensions. The paper analyzes various effects of such manipulation and, in particuliar, attempts to demonstrate that time manipulation contributes to shape the reader's emotional response.

L'essai ne s'intéresse pas à la thématique du temps dans la longue nouvelle de John Metcalf, "Travelling Northward", si importante soit-elle, mais à la temporalité narrative, et singulièrement à la relation d'ordre entre le temps de l'histoire et celui du discours. Le récit de Metcalf qui combine une ferme ligne chronologique et un jeu subtil avec les analepses réussit à mettre en valeur à la fois la dimension épisodique et la dimension configurationnelle, Divers effets de l’ordre narratif sont étudiés qui tendent à montrer que la manipulation temporelle est un facteur important dans la programmation y compris affective de la lecture.
