Under the Volcano can be read as an allegory, but also as a tale about the failure and eventual disappearance of meaning ; thus, the position of the characters is highly paradoxical, since they both embody the human spirit in all its universality and tend to disintegrate into an incoherent jumble of signifiers. It is the voice which ultimately makse them cohere, since it is at once the origin and limit of all meaning.

Under the Volcano , récit allégorique, est aussi celui de l'éclipse, voire de la disparition du sens ; ainsi, le statut des personnages, qui, à la fois, symbolisent l'âme humaine dans ce qu'elle a d'universel et tendent à se résoudre en une poussière de signifiants épars, y est profondément paradoxal, leur véritable cohérence, c'est à la voix que les personnages la doivent – à la voix, origine et horizon ultime de toute signification.
