The subject of Caliban

Recent criticism of The Tempest has sought to portray Caliban as a victim, both of Prospéra and of the play itself. This paper suggests that Caliban appears as a victim only insofar as the play constructs him as a subject, by endowing him with a fully individuated language. Calibans speeches, in particular those in which he presents himself as a victim, determine specific relations to others and to his island because the organization of deixis is inseparable from the construction of the line, the use of modality, the associative chains of signifiers. This paper is thus an attempt to read, beyond the anthropology of nature which makes Caliban a victim in The Tempest, the anthropology of language which makes him a subject.

La critique récente de La Tempête, notamment dans le domaine des études post-coloniales, a cherché à décrire Caliban comme une victime de Prospéra autant que de la pièce elle-même. On part ici de la proposition que Caliban n’est perçu comme victime que dans la mesure où La Tempête le construit comme sujet, par l’individuation de son langage. Les discours de Caliban, en particulier ceux où il se représente comme victime, déterminent un rapport intersubjectif spécifique parce que l’organisation de la déixis y est inséparable de la construction du vers, de la modalité, des chaînes associatives de signifiants. On cherche ainsi à lire, par-delà l’anthropologie de la nature qui fait de Caliban une victime dans La Tempête, l’anthropologie du langage qui en fait un sujet.
