In this article we propose to explore some of the mechanisms engaged by the speaker to check ambiguity in an effort to channel meaning. We shall begin by examining how the combined activity of the vocal apparatus, the articulators and the supraglottal cavities succeeds in shaping the glottal tone into a quantity of distinctive vowels ; then we shall present Umberto Eco’s analysis of how the speaker copes with polysemy in the construction of meaning ; finally we shall propose a reinterpretation of the accentual hierarchy in discourse based on an experimental study in the hope of gaining a better insight into the way accent is used to orient interpretation. Whether the speaker is concerned with differentiating vowel timbre, singling out sememic properties or establishing a hierarchy of importance amongst the meaningful nodes in his discourse, it becomes apparent that the procedures he employs are not so dissimilar as they may seem to be on the surface.

Dans cet article nous proposons d’étudier quelques mécanismes mis en jeu par le locuteur dans un effort d’écarter de son discours les éventuelles ambiguïtés et de guider son interlocuteur dans la reconstruction de son message. Nous commençons par expliquer comment le phénomène de la résonance permet à partir du seul ton laryngien d’obtenir une quantité de timbres vocaliques distincts ; puis nous présentons l’analyse proposée par Umberto Eco de la manière dont le locuteur résout les problèmes de polysémie et construit du sens ; enfin nous proposons à partir d’une analyse expérimentale une ré-interprétation de la hiérarchie accentuelle dans le discours dans le but de mieux comprendre le rôle de l’accent dans l’orientation de l’interprétation. Que ce soit dans le domaine de la différentiation du timbre vocalique, du choix des propriétés sémémiques à valoriser ou de la hiérarchisation des éléments significatifs du discours, il s’avère que des procédés, qui à première vue semblent n’avoir aucun rapport entre eux, partagent des points communs.
