Cities dreaming : Passageways between Paris and New York

To interpret is to bridge a gap between something and something else. More than dreams or poems, the interpretation of cities seems to generate a wider confusion, not only between interpretable object and interpretation, but comprehending also the interpreter. Based on Herbert Muschamp’s presupposition that one city helps to understand another — that Paris can serve as an interpretation of New York —, this article views cities as dreams -as do Walter Benjamin in The Arcades Project, Louis Aragon in Le Paysan de Paris and Lewis Mumford in his articles suggesting the existence of an “unconscious architecture” in New York.

Interpréter, c’est combler un fossé entre quelque chose et quelque chose d’autre. Davantage encore que celle des rêves ou des poèmes, l’interprétation des villes est source de confusions, entre objet, interprétation et interprète. Fondé sur la présupposition d’Herbert Muschamp qu’une ville permet de mieux comprendre une autre — que Paris peut servir à interpréter New York —, cet article considère les villes comme autant de rêves — comme l’ont fait Walter Benjamin dans The Arcades Project, Louis Aragon dans Le Paysan de Paris et Lewis Mumford dans ses articles suggérant l’existence d’une «architecture inconsciente» à New York.
