Cet article étudie un moyen de représenter graphiquement le sémantisme des verbes à particules en anglais avec un diagramme de type «toile d’araignée». Deux types de résultats sont ainsi testés. D’abord, le sens est vu comme un ensemble de traits sémantiques (Consigny, 2000). Chaque trait sémantique pris comme variable et se voit assigner un facteur, qui permet sa localisation sur le schéma, pour une visualisation du sens. Ensuite, une vue plus globale est adoptée : pour un verbe à particule donné, les variables incluent entre autres degré de polysémie, fréquence d’emploi et importance relative des parties. Ce type de représentation pose certains problèmes, mais donne la possibilité d’avoir une vue d’ensemble du verbe à particule. Ces avantages et inconvénients sont étudiés dans l’optique de leur utilisation pédagogique.
